What is Technical SEO?

Updated: Sep 1, 2022

SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization that is used in digital marketing for the purpose to find products and services, including your personal webpage and just about everything else. So how does a search engine know to pinpoint a response to your search request?

Enter Technical SEO …

Simply stated, it is the process of optimizing a website so Google 'find' tools can expeditiously access, crawl, interpret, and index your website. It's not exclusively about content or keywords, although they are helpful. A website requires words and structural components that are considered elements of technical SEO, such as:

  1. Structure of a page

  2. Title and description of a page

  3. The types of content

  4. The context of the content

  5. Number of incoming and outgoing links

  6. When it was created and updated

Technical SEO has nothing to do with the actual content of a website. The mechanism of technical SEO does not describe your widget or service, its only purpose is to optimize the infrastructure of a website.

The elements of technical SEO include the following:

  • Google Search Engine Console

  • Crawling and Indexing

  • Preferred Domain

  • Robots.txt

  • SEO Friendly URL

  • XML Sitemap

  • Schema Markup

  • Breadcrumbs

  • Canonical URL

  • Hreflang

  • Site Structure

  • 301, 302, and 404 server codes

The April 2020 ranking placed Google at an impressive 87.35% among the top ten search engines on the world wide web.

2022 Google ranked 1st place:

And Google has a lot to say about how search optimization works. The evolution of the Internet has changed how Google search works. Recently Google introduced Knowledge Graph. This smart tool searches for context or meaning rather than only keywords. If you're up to it, you can read the 168-page PDF of do's & don't for the eight-point Google algorithm checklist.

Some things to consider:

  • Pen high-quality content that matches the searchers' intent.

  • Provide the right signals for search engine crawlers to understand the structure of your website.

  • Help search spiders understand the meaning (context) of your website.

  • Give search engine algorithms reasons to rank your site higher = SERP

  • On-page SEO relates to the content, to make it relevant for the searcher

  • Off-page SEO or link building upgrades your site ranking.

  • Technical SEO is all about crawling and indexing so the correct response is generated to a search query
